I am now officially excited.

The Jets inched closer to a possible playoff berth with a spirited 26-13 victory over the Vikings in Minnesota.  Quarterback Chad Pennington sliced and diced his way to the tune of 339 yards passing and Laveranues Coles continued to be the NFL's most underrated receiver by hauling in 12 passes for 144 yards and a TD catch.

It didn't start well for Gang Green.  Pennington fumbled on the second play of the game and Minnesota turned the turnover into a touchdown three plays later.  However, in a trait that has come to define this team, the Jets battled back and ripped off a 12 play 67 yard drive that knotted the score at 7-7 and crushed any momentum gained by the Vikings on the early miscue.

The defense also contributed and bounced back from a horrible game last week against Buffalo by holding Minnesota to 62 yards on the ground and forced Brad Childress to pull an ineffective Brad Johnson from the game late in the third quarter, much to the delight of the Minnesota faithful.

The Jets have now assured themselves of at least a .500 record, a feat I thought impossible at the start of the year.  They have also made me greedy for more.  Oh sure, their running game is non-existent, the defense, while improving, has leaks everywhere and if Pennington has a bad game they can't overcome it.  All the same, I'm thinking playoffs and why not?  This is the most schizophrenic NFL year in recent memory and Mangini has this team believing in itself.

The Christmas night showdown against Miami will be a war.  Both teams hate each other, and the Dolphins would like nothing more than to ruin this Cinderella run.  Still, I like the Jets' chances. They have played well on the road (5-2) and have persevered and overachieved all season.

And I don't want this season to end just yet.
