Jets Cut Barlow Loose

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

The Jets cut Kevan Barlow today in a move that should shock, well, no one.  Barlow was brought in to solidify the running game but instead spent more time on the bench with the emergence of Leon Washington.

That leaves the Jets with this at running back: Leon Washington, Cedric Houston, Derrick Blaylock and Stacy Tutt.

Not exactly Running Back U.  Also, I believe Blaylock entered the Witness Protection Program around week 7 and Stacy Tutt has practice squad written all over him.

However, this year's free agent pool isn't exactly stellar.  It will be interesting to see if the Jets go after a big name to carry the bulk of the workload (like an Ahman Green) or continue to utilize the running back by committee approach (that seems to be the trend now) and pick up a complementary piece like a Chris Brown or Dominic Rhodes.  I don't think a high profile back will be available when the Jets pick 25th in the upcoming draft.

The search is on.

The Jets should try and sign Ron Dayne. Or coax Freeman McNeil or Johnny Hector out of retirement. Else draft Brian Leonard from Rutgers, he'll give some credibility to the Jets franchise.

Chris Brown is often injured. The Jets already have a back similar to Rhodes in size and style in Washington. The Jets need a big or bigger than who they already have back. I would try and go after Betts or Shipp.

Tony Hunt could be availabe in the draft but I don't think he's worth using a first round pick on. Also those running backs coming out of Penn State are always a gamble. How do the names Blair Thomas and KiJana Carter strike you? Although the Chiefs lucked out with the at first militant Larry Johnson.

The Raiders would be happy to trade you LaMont Jordan and Robert Gallery for D'Brickshaw. Heck they'll give you Gallery for free or a hot dog.

Angelo,

Ah, Freeman. No one got up slower than you once you were tackled. I'm not even going to comment on the Blair Thomas error -- I mean era.

I really don't like anyone out there in the free agent market, but I know they'll have to choose someone. Ladell Betts would have been a good fit, but he signed a contract extension (yeah, I didn't know either) with the Redskins in December.

Honestly, I would take LaMont back (not in exchange for "Da Brick" though). I think that whole situation in Oakland has hurt his game (no offense). Now, about that hot dog . . .

The Jets should absolutely NOT draft Brian Leonard. The Eagles are going to take him in the second round. The Jets should stick to picking up scrubs off the scrap heap.

You guys crack me up... the Jets have Michael Turner (from SD, a.k.a. LDT's backup) locked up. They are now $20 million under the cap, and Turner is the best running back available, draft or otherwise. They should grab him, and I'm sure they will push hard....

SML,

Turner's a restricted free agent and I don't think the Jets are willing to part with draft picks. He would be a nice addition though.

Bri,

The race is on for the Pride of Rutgers!!

Presuming he's just a first-round tender restricted running back(most likely scenerio) I think the Jets will be willing to give up their late-round 1st rounder for a top back like Turner. He is a top-15 back in the league next year if he's a starter.

Also, remember: The Jets have the money, and their offensive coordinator (Brian Schottenheimer) is familiar with Turner going back to his SD days. So they will want him. Only way I see them not going for him is if SD puts the 1st and 3rd round tender on Turner; that might be too much.

SML,

I think Tuner has potential, (he actually reminds me of LaMont Jordan) but I'm still not sure on what to make of him as a starter.

I also think that the Jets are looking to build through the draft and don't want to part with picks -- even if they are late in the first round.
