Blasphemy.
In a somewhat interesting article in The New York Times today, Howard W. Rosenberg (an author and baseball historian), states that Derek Jeter is "not the 11th captain of the New York Yankees", but in fact "either the 14th or 15th."
His research goes back to 1902, when the Yanks were the Highlanders (interesting note: the team was officially called the New York Americans, but was referred to as the Highlanders. I had no idea.) and names four guys I've never heard of as captains of those early teams.
Rosenberg's work has been met with a "thanks, but we know what we're doing over here" from the Yankees.
Rosenberg has already changed the record book for the Boston Red Sox when he discovered that Jason Varitek was the team's 18th captain and not the fourth.
Does this drastically change the history of the Yanks? No. As long as the Yanks don't make Jeter wear that stupid "C" on his uniform, I could care less.
