Spent the 2006 NFL season on your sofa? Welcome to the 2007 New York Jets!
The Jets bolstered the defensive line (I guess) by signing former first-round pick Michael Haynes today. Haynes was drafted 14th overall by the Chicago Bears in 2003, but was cut before the start of the 2006 season. He was then a New Orleans Saint for about 5 minutes before being released and missed the entire 2006 season.
The move is the latest in ho-hum transactions for the Jets this off-season since stealing Thomas Jones from the Bears. A few others include the re-signing of RT Anthony Clement (who played OK during the season, but it's a position the Jets could have upgraded), the pick-up of FB Darian Barnes (who seems to be in line to take up the role of departed FB B.J. Askew) and the re-signing of 13-year vet DE Bobby Hamilton.
It seems clear that head coach Eric Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum are set on using the old New England Patriots method of building a team which is: don't throw money around. I say "old" because the Pats are spending cash this year like drunken sailors.
This year's available free agents at defensive end and defensive tackle are pretty lackluster, but it still seems odd to pick up a guy that missed all of last year. I suppose the Jets are banking on Haynes's potential since he was a former first-rounder.
Let's hope there is some magic in these moves or moves on the horizon.
