Just give Alex Rodriguez the MVP right now.
The Yankees scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth, all with two outs, and A-Rod delivered another game winning three-run bomb to give the Yanks an astonishing 8-6 victory over the stunned Cleveland Indians in the Bronx. Rodriguez has now homered in three straight games and leads the league with 10 round-trippers and 26 RBIs.
The Good:
Alex Rodriguez. I was shocked that the Indians decided to pitch to A-Rod in the ninth. Joe Borowski unleashed a wild pitch on his first delivery to Rodriguez which moved the runners up to second and third. That left a parking spot for Rodriguez at first. Sure, it would have brought Jason Giambi to the plate with the bases loaded, but A-Rod is the hottest hitter on the planet right now. Next pitch: BOOM!
Bobby Abreu. Abreu collected four hits and drove in two runs and his clutch two strike RBI single in the ninth put A-Rod in the position to be the hero once again. He also stole his fourth base of the season.
Jason Giambi. Giambi homered in the sixth to give the Yanks a short-lived 2-1 lead. Maybe his homer was the reason the Indians decided to pitch to A-Rod in the ninth.
The Bad:
Luis Vizcaino. Vizcaino has been great so far, but he was awful in the seventh. With the Yankees clinging to a 2-1 lead, Vizcaino walked Jason Michaels to lead off the inning, gave up a double to Grady Sizemore and then eventually gave up a three-run blast to Victor Martinez. His finished with this ugly line: 1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 HR.
Joe Torre. Darrell Rasner started and was pitching OK, but Torre pulled him with one out in the fifth. Rasner's pitch count was fine (81) so I was surprised that Joe gave him the early hook. The bullpen has been great, but you can't expect it to be perfect every time. Also, the game was a pitching duel at that point and the score was tied 1-1. What if the game headed into extras? Strange decision by Torre.
The Ugly:
In the eighth inning Mike Rouse hit a pop-up off third. A-Rod leaned into the stands and tried to make the catch, but two fans didn't get out of the way. One of the guys already had a ball in his hand as he tried to catch the foul ball with his cap. Rouse eventually walked, but the Indians didn't score. C'mon fans -- use your heads!
Today's win and sweep of the Tribe puts the Yanks two games above .500 at 8-6 (their high-water mark) for the season. Up next for the Bombers: a three game set in Boston against the Red Sox.
And A-Rod is just heating up.
