It was either going to be a rousing come-from-behind victory or another brutal extra inning loss.
Jason Giambi, Public Enemy #1 in Oakland, gave the A's fans another reason to despise him as he blasted a game-winning homer in the 13th inning to lead the Yanks to a 4-3 victory.
Once again I was at the mercy of John and Suzy so I can't say I watched the game, but I was listening into the wee hours.
The Good:
Darrell Rasner. Rasner could have tanked it after Derek Jeter's error led to three first inning runs for Oakland. He didn't and his resolve kept the Yanks in the game. His totals: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R (0 earned), 0 BB, 1 K.
The Yankee Pen. Seven relievers combined to pitch 7 2/3 of no-run baseball. Brian Bruney got the win to even his record at 1-1, but I'm going to give every reliever a W in my mental Rolodex for their effort.
Jason Giambi. Giambi was in a nasty funk before his game-winning clout. He'll probably never again be the MVP-type player he was in Oakland, but he still has the ability to get big hits.
Jorge Posada. Posada's pinch-hit RBI double tied the game in the seventh. Posada is probably the least appreciated "core Yankee" left from the golden years. Sure, he grounds into a bunch of double plays and has mental lapses behind the plate and on the basepaths, but he's still one of the best catchers the Yankees have ever had.
The Bad:
Team Defense. Derek Jeter committed two more errors and now has five in ten games. Cano and Abreu also got in on the act as the Bombers finished with four errors on the day. Jeter's error in the first helped put the Yanks in an early 3-0 hole and if not for Melky Cabrera's gun in left, it could have been much worse. The starting pitching has started to turn it around and now it's up to the D to tighten up as well.
The Ugly:
Two games in Oakland have combined to go 24 innings. The Yanks have a strong pen, but their workload is staring to become obscene. Hopefully, this won't have an adverse affect come July and August.
Andy Pettitte will try and give the Yanks the series and will go against A's right-hander Rich Harden on Sunday. If all goes according to form, this game should go at least 12 innings and last over four hours.
Ah, Monday's an off day.
