For the first time this season the New York Yankees did not commit an error.
Baby steps, people. Baby steps.
The Yanks dropped their second straight Friday, this time to the Baltimore Orioles, 6-4. Once again a starter failed to deliver at least five innings.
The Good:
The bullpen pitched 5 innings of one-hit ball. Sean Henn in particular kept the Yanks in the game with his three innings of scoreless relief.
Derek Jeter went 2-5 and passed Don Mattingly for sixth place on the all-time Yankee career hits list (2,154).
The Bad:
Mike Mussina gave up two quick runs in the first inning and fought himself through his four innings of work. His line: a deplorable 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 BB. I'm not a big fan of the radar gun, but if it was accurate, Moose was consistently hovering around the 84 MPH mark.
Once again the Yanks failed to get the big hit and left 25 runners on base. Jason Giambi was 0-5 and left 6 ducks on the pond.
The Ugly:
Jeter fouled a ball off his foot in the first inning and was hobbled the rest of the way. He didn't go out for defense in the ninth inning so you know it had to be painful. Thankfully, X-Rays showed only a bruised toe and Jeter expects to play on Saturday. The Yankees are a different team without The Captain.
Kei Igawa will make his major league debut Saturday afternoon against former New York Metropolitan Steve Trachsel. Let's see if the $46 million man can impress the fans in the Bronx. All he has to do to win me over is make it into the sixth.
Baby steps.
