"What else can go wrong for this team, Suzyn?"
Those were the words I heard John Sterling mutter when I turned on the Yankee game in my car Saturday afternoon. I just wanted to get a feel for the game before family obligations called me away from the action.
Jeff Karstens had just taken a line drive off the right leg. He tried valiantly to continue, but could not. X-Rays would later reveal a fractured tibia. The team would say later that Karstens could come back this year, but I wouldn't count on it. Tough break (really, no pun intended - I like Karstens) for the kid.
The baton was passed to Kei Igawa. It was the only choice. There was no one else.
And Kei Igawa saved the day.
Igawa delivered six innings of shutout baseball and Jorge Posada blasted a two-run homer to give the Yankees a 3-1 victory of the Boston Red Sox. It was the Yankees first victory in over a week.
Since I wasn't able to watch the game and had to rely on my cousin's phone for updates, my good, bad and ugly shtick will be brief. Check out Brian's post for a more comprehensive report.
The Good:
Kei Igawa. Igawa was the hero of the day. He was skipped over in favor of Karstens and could have been exiled to the bullpen to "work things out" for a long time. His game saving line: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K, 1 WP. Igawa was Kusshi (Japanese for outstanding. I swear, I looked it up.)!
Jorge Posada. Posada went 1-2 with 2 walks and the all-important two-run bomb.
Derek Jeter. Jeter collected three hits for the second straight game. He's now hitting .348 (tied for the team high with A-Rod).
Mariano Rivera. Rivera notched his first save of the season. It's been a long time coming.
The Bad:
Kyle Farnsworth. Once my cousin told me that Farnsworth was in the game I immediately shuttered. The guy continues to frustrate. He was able to keep the lead for Rivera, but not without giving up a run. His line: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K.
The Ugly:
Jeff Karstens. Karstens has had a rough year and we're still in April. He started the season on the DL and will probably finish the year on the DL. Still, I have to admire his courage for trying to pitch on a shattered leg. Carl Pavano could learn something from watching Karstens.
The Yanks will try and take the series on Sunday afternoon as Chien-Ming Wang will make his second start of the season and his first at Yankee Stadium. He will go against Julian "I'll put whatever I can on the baseball to get guys out" Tavarez.
Should be fun.
