And that's why you can't predict the NFL Draft.
The New York Jets did some wheeling and dealing Saturday afternoon. They traded up to the 14th spot and selected cornerback Darrelle Revis from Pittsburgh in the first round. The Jets swapped their 25th pick for the 14th pick with the Carolina Panthers and also received a sixth-round pick from the Panthers (No. 199 overall) in exchange for the Jets second-round pick (No. 59 overall) and their fifth-round pick (No. 164 overall).
Revis was an All-Big East Conference first-team player last season as a Junior. He's also a playmaker on both defense and special teams. He returned two picks for touchdowns this past season and also returned a punt for a score. He blocked a field goal in 2005 against Connecticut which was returned by teammate Bernard Lay for six.
Revis was a guy I saw early in mock drafts going to the Jets. As the draft approached, however, his stock began to rise and it looked as if he wouldn't be available when the Jets finally picked 25th. I guess his toughness, character and big play ability were too much for the Jets to pass up. This is the first time the Jets have selected a corner in the first round since 1994 when they chose cornerback Aaron Glenn from Texas A & M.
I'm pleased with the pick. The Jets needed a corner and Revis should fit right into the starting lineup alongside Andre Dyson. Also, teaming Revis with CB/KR Justin Miller could give the Jets a dynamic one-two punch on kickoff and punt returns.
Welcome to the Green and White Darrelle.
The Jets weren't finished making some moves in the second round. The Jets made a trade with the Green Bay Packers and moved up to the 47th spot and selected LB David Harris from Michigan. The Jets received the Pack's seventh-round pick (No. 235 overall) in exchange for the Jets second-round pick (No. 63 overall), their third-rounder (No. 89 overall) and a sixth-round pick (No. 191 overall).
Davis was a major contributor to the Wolverines No. 1 rush defense last season. He is experienced in both the 4-3 and 3-4 which is good news for the Jets. He was a second-team All American and should help beef up the Jets run defense. His arrival could possibly signal the end of Eric Barton's career as a Jet although I hope that's not the case.
So far, so good for Gang Green.
