Thoughts on NFL Draft Eve

In case any pro football fan has been hibernating in a cave since February, the NFL Draft takes place this weekend at Radio City Music Hall.  This weekend is basically as close as a fan can come to Christmas for their teams.

Honestly, I'm hit-or-miss when it comes to the draft.  I'm usually juiced up if the Jets have a top 10 pick (which usually means they've had a horrible season or made a tremendous trade.  Most likely it's a horrible season) or interested but not glued to the set if they have a pick late in the first round.

The Jets have the 25th overall pick this year (barring a trade) and will probably look to improve on defense, but could go for a wide receiver or tight end if the right player is available.

Here are the names I've seen most often in countless mock drafts regarding the Jets this year:

 CB Aaron Ross (Texas)

CB Darrelle Revis (Pitt)

LB Paul Posluszny (Penn State)

WR Robert Meachem (Tennessee)

TE Greg Olson (Miami)

DT Justin Harrell (Tennessee)

The front runner is Ross even though head coach Eric Mangini would prefer not to take a corner with the first pick.  Still, it's a glaring need for the team and Ross is said to excel in man coverage.

The dark horse (and probably every fan's wish) is TE Greg Olson.  He can stretch the field and has great speed for a tight end.  But, unless the Jets trade up or every team ahead of the Jets just plumb forgets he's in the draft, it's a tremendous long-shot.

GM Mike Tannenbaum, Mangini and the rest of the Jets hierarchy had a very successful draft in 2006.  Last year saw eight of the ten picks get playing time last season including: LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, C Nick Mangold, WR/RB/QB Brad Smith and RB Leon Washington.  I expect more of the same from Tannenbaum and company.

But, really I'm just glad that the hype and debate are over.  I mean, how many times do I have to see and hear Mel Kiper Jr.?  Or listen to the countless rumors and speculations?  Here are some lyrics to a Carcass song  that I feel are just perfect regarding every team and every person involved with the NFL Draft:

Don't Believe a Word

(Music: Steer)

(Lyrics: Walker)

You should never take too literally what you read,

Misinformation, distortion, make belief,

Fabrications, half truths implied,

Misquotations, out of context, and lies,

"I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but ..."

Lies - you believe them all,

Lies - you swallow them whole,

Lies, lies, half truths misinformation and ...

Anyway, you get the point.  I'll be at a Communion Party for the draft, but Depressed Fan  (Brian) and Tremendous Upside Potential  (Rickhouse) will have updates throughout the day.

Check them out and see if they like their Christmas presents.
