It's still April, but only two teams have a worse record than the Yankees at this point.
The Kansas City Royals and the Washington Nationals.
Yep, it's been a rough first month.
The Yankees dropped the rubber game to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, 7-4, in the Bronx. The loss snapped the Yankees winning streak at one.
The Good:
Doug Mientkiewicz. Mientkiewicz blasted a three-run homer in the third inning to give the Yanks a 3-2 lead. Mientkiewicz was set to bunt with runners on first and second, but a wild pitch advanced the runners without the bunt. I still would have left the bunt on. Mientkiewicz's homer shut me up.
Derek Jeter. Jeter belted a meaningless homer in the eighth, but you can see he's ready to catch fire. Too bad the rest of the lineup is headed in the opposite direction.
The Bad:
Chien-Ming Wang. Wang was bringing the heat, but his location was off. It was obvious from the first inning when he gave up a mammoth shot to David Ortiz. He also gave Yankee fans a bit of a scare in the fifth. Torre and the trainers trotted out to look at his hand after he gave up a two-runner homer to the usually light hitting Alex Cora, but Wang stayed in the game. Wang's line: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 1 K, 2 HR.
The bullpen. The pen once again turned a manageable one-run deficit into a four-run disadvantage. The Yanks didn't deserve to win this game, but the pen doesn't have to make it impossible. Pen Line: 3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR.
Johnny Damon. Damon has been bothered by a bad back and it shows. He looks like he's 70 years old up at the plate. I admire his toughness, but it's really just a matter of time before he hits the DL for the first time in his career.
The Ugly:
April. The Yanks are off on Monday so their April ledger is complete. They finished 9-14 for the month, 6.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox and in last place in the AL East.
May can't get here fast enough.
