Halos Three-Run First Stands Up

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Yankees received solid starting pitching, but were unable to muster any offense against Kelvim Escobar as the Angels three-run first was enough to defeat the Yanks 3-1 on a hazy Saturday afternoon at The Stadium.

The Good:

Chien-Ming Wang.  Wang was bad early as he gave up three runs in the first, but he was excellent the rest of the way.  His control wasn't there today, but he gave the Yanks length and kept them in the ballgame.  Wanger's totals: 8 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 6 K.  The loss drops him to 3-4 on the year.

Doug Mientkiewicz.  Mientkiewicz drove in the lone Yankee run on an opposite field single with two outs in the fourth.  He finished 1 for 3.  Not really a spectacular day, but I felt like giving him some recognition.

The Bad:

Bobby Abreu.  Abreu was in the leadoff spot today, but his slump continued.  He struck out looking to end the game with runners on first and third (even though he got screwed on the strike three call).  He finished 1 for 5 with 3 K's and left three runners on base.

The Ugly:

Orlando Cabrera.  Cabrera is a good player and he's having a solid season (.306, 3 HR, 26 RBI, 6 SB), but his lack of effort today was appalling.  He finished 0 for 4 and refused to run out his ground outs.  It doesn't take talent to run hard to first four times a game.  Disgraceful.

Mike Mussina will get the call on Sunday and will try and bounce back from a terrible start last week against Boston.  The Angels will send John Lackey to the hill as they gun for the sweep.

Things are looking pretty grim in YankeeLand on this Memorial Day Weekend.
