The nightmare continues for the Yankees.
Starting pitcher Darrell Rasner left the game in the first inning with a broken finger and the Yanks couldn't find any relief as they dropped another to the Mets, 10-7, on a cold, rainy, ugly day in Flushing. The Bombers have lost three in a row and seven of their last nine.
The Good:
Jorge Posada. Posada is putting together the best start of his career. He rapped out four more hits and leads the league with a .386 average. He's obviously not letting the Yankee pitching problems affect him at the plate. Posada finished 4 for 5 with 1 homer, 2 ribbies and a run scored.
Josh Phelps. Phelps had his best day at the plate this season. He went 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Bad:
Mike Myers. Myers has been lobbying for a start all season and when Rasner went down in the first inning, his wish was granted. He came into the game with runners on first and third and nobody out in the first. He almost got out of the inning without giving up multiple runs. Almost. Myers gave up three runs in the first and one in the second before leaving in the third. Myers was put into a tough situation, but he didn't pitch well. I don't think he will be volunteering his services in a starting role again this season. At least, he shouldn't. His totals: 2+ IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 HR.
Robinson Cano. Cano had a good day at the plate (2 for 5 with a homer), but was atrocious in the field. He committed three errors and at times looked like he never played second base before in his life.
The Ugly:
Darrell Rasner breaking his finger. Rasner almost ran out to the mound before the top of the first inning was over so you knew that he was ready to pitch. Unfortunately, his day wouldn't last long. Endy Chavez's comebacker hit Rasner on his pitching hand and fractured his finger. Rasner tried to continue, but spun off the mound and bolted for the dugout after a warmup pitch. He'll be heading toward the DL. He also got tagged with the loss without recording an out. When it rains, it pours.
The Yanks are now 5 games under .500 and 11 games behind the BoSox. The Red Sox are playing the second game of a doubleheader as I write this (and are trailing 11-0 to the Braves in eighth) so the deficit could "shrink" to 10 1/2 by the end of the night. But, really, the Yanks just have to start winning ballgames.
The Yanks will send rookie Tyler Clippard to the mound Sunday. He will be the 11th different starting pitcher to take the hill for the Yankees this year. The Mets will try for the sweep and counter with John Maine.
The sky may not be falling, but it's definitely starting to rumble.
