Tavarez Kills Any Yankee Momentum

What a difference a day makes.

The Yanks were feisty and aggressive on Monday night, but they pulled a 180 degree turn and were flat and lethargic on Tuesday night as they lost to the Red Sox, 7-3 in the Bronx.  Mike Mussina pitched poorly and Julian Tavarez shutdown the Yankee offense.

Just let that settle in.  Julian Tavarez shutdown the Yanks.

The Good:

Derek Jeter.  Jeter only went 1 for 5 and struck out to end the game, but he did extend his hitting streak to 17 games with a single in the eighth.  It was that type of game, people.

The Bad:

Mike Mussina.  Mussina gave up a three-run homer in the top of the first which put the Yanks in an early hole.  He could have crumbled after that inning, but settled down until the seventh.  With the Sox leading 4-2, the Yanks got hosed on a call (again) as Coco Crisp was called safe as he "stole" second with two outs.  It was a bang-bang play, but he looked out.  Mussina couldn't overcome the call and gave up two runs to extend the Boston lead to 6-2.  Mussina's losing line: 6.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 HR.  Mussina has to start pitching like The Moose and not Bullwinkle if the Yanks are going to go anywhere this season.

Bobby Abreu.  Abreu continues to look befuddled at the plate as he finished 0 for 4.  The way Abreu is swinging, it's just a matter of time before Torre inserts Melky in right full-time.

The Ugly:

Suzyn Waldman vs. "Mad Dog" Chris Russo.  File this under "ugly, but funny" if you're scoring at home.  Mike and the Mad Dog have had a lot of fun with Suzy's call of Clemens' return to the Yankees and it seems Waldman is taking offense.  Apparently, Waldman ripped into a profanity laced tirade as she saw Russo outside the radio booth over the weekend at Shea.  I wish I could have seen this.

The Yanks still have a chance to take two of three against the Red Sox on Wednesday night.  Andy Pettitte will go up against the "talkative" Curt Schilling.

Which Yankee team will show up?
