Washburn Subdues Yankees

At least it didn't take long for the Mariners to beat the Yankees.

Jarrod Washburn shut down the Yankees in Seattle Friday night, 3-0, in a game that took only 2 hours and 19 minutes

I was listening to the game on the radio so John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman were my "eyes" for this one and it sounded like the Yanks had no chance against Washburn and the Mariners.  Washburn pitched 8 shutout innings and allowed only 6 hits.  By Sterling's account, only 2 were hit hard.

 The Good:

Scott Proctor.  Proctor came into the game in the sixth and pitched two innings of shut down ball.  Proctor is still appealing his 4 game suspension and has pitched well as he awaits his sentence.

Jorge Posada.  Posada accounted for one third of the Yankee hit total as he went 2 for 4.  He pushed his season average to a robust .358.

The Bad:

Darrell Rasner.  If the Yanks could have mustered some offense, Rasner would have been in the "good" column.  He made only one mistake, the home run off the bat of Kenji Johjima, in the fourth. But sometimes life isn't fair and life on the diamond is no exception.  Rasner's totals: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 K.

The Ugly:

Signing with a team in retirement.  An important piece of the Yankee dynasty visited with Sterling and Waldman during the broadcast Friday night.  Good 'ol Jeff Nelson stopped by the booth to say hello. Nelson signed with the Yanks this past off-season so he could "retire as a Yank."  This has happened a lot in sports over the last decade or so and it really makes no sense to me.  Does retiring with a team guarantee that everyone will remember you as a member of that organization?  I don't think so.  I'll remember your contributions to the championships Nellie, but not because you signed with the Yanks as you retired.

Rookie Matt DeSalvo will make the second start of his career on Saturday night.  He will go up against the major's "poet laureate" Miguel Batista.  These two hooked up earlier in the week and both pitchers came away with a no decision.

Let's see if DeSalvo can spin another gem against the Mariners and earn his first big league win.
