Yanks Blast Rangers But Lose Hughes

Honestly, I really have to question whether someone has put a hex or curse on the Yankees right now.

Phil Hughes was on his way to delivering a no-hitter, in only his second Major League start, when his left hamstring popped on a pitch to Mark Teixeira in the seventh inning.

He was then removed from the game as the injury bug continues to feed on the Yanks. The injury overshadowed the Bombers 10-1 lambasting of the Texas Rangers Tuesday night in Arlington

The Good:

Phil Hughes.  Hughes was dealing from the very beginning.  His fastball was locking up the Ranger bats and his change-up was devastating.  He was working quickly and efficiently and had the swagger of a big-time pitcher.  I guess this was the reason why everyone wanted him in the big leagues right now.  The line on Hughes' first big league win: 6.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K.

Jorge Posada.  Posada may be off to the best start of his career.  He continues to smoke the baseball and finished 3-4 with 2 RBIs, 3 runs scored and a walk.

Robinson Cano.  Cano finally broke out of his shell and put together his best game of the season so far.  He finished the night 4-5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Alex Rodriguez.  A-Rod quietly collected 3 hits in his return to Texas despite the boos birds.  He won't find any peace until after this road swing as the Yanks head for Seattle over the weekend.*

The Bad:

Melky Cabrera.  Melky was one of only two Yankee regulars not to get a hit tonight (the other being Jason Giambi) as he took the collar and finished 0-4.  He did mange to work out a walk and drive in a run, but his average has dipped to a scrawny .190 on the season.

 The Ugly:

The injury to Phil Hughes.  This injury is potentially devastating.  Not only was Hughes on his way toward pitching a no-hitter, but he was also working on cementing his place in the Yankee rotation.  He was showing that he had the stuff to be a number 1 pitcher and the mental make-up as well.  Even if this isn't a serious injury, look for the Yankees to treat Hughes with kid gloves as he rehabs.  They aren't going to rush him back, especially after his performance on Tuesday.

Andy Pettitte will try and make it two in a row for the Yanks on Wednesday and will go against Ranger righty Robinson Tejeda.

So far, even when the Yankees win this season, they lose.

*CORRECTION (5/3): The Yankees will be playing the Mariners in Yankee Stadium this weekend NOT in Seattle.
