Mr. Kendall goes to Washington

The ugly Pete Kendall saga has come to an end.

The Jets traded the former starting left guard to the Washington Redskins for a conditional draft pick.  The team flirted with the possibility of keeping the 11-year vet and actually inserting him as the starter, but in the end this is probably the best thing for Kendall and the Jets.  You can't keep a guy on the roster who doesn't want to be there.  Kendall has been a true professional through all this, but it would be just a matter of time before he disrupted the team.

It's just another reminder that this is a business and no sport is more cut-throat than the NFL.  I can't blame Kendall for expecting the Jets to pony up the money they promised him when they restructured his contract after the 2005 season.  Kendall is obviously on the downside of his career and probably doesn't deserve a raise, but the Jets should have kept their word.  I guess the old saying is true -- always get it in writing.

This now leaves the Green and White with this trifecta for the guard slot:  Adrien Clarke (who hasn't really looked sharp this preseason), sixth-round rookie Jacob Bender (who played tackle at Division I-AA Nicholls State) and Wade Smith (who never started an NFL game).

Keep your fingers crossed.

Anyway, the Jets will receive a fifth-round pick in 2008 if Kendall plays 80 percent of the snaps for the 'Skins this season and if it's more, Gang Green will receive a fourth-round pick in 2009 instead.

The Jets also announced that they will be wearing their "throw back" blue and gold uniforms from the New York Titans days in their home game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 14.  Ah, yes, the good ol' Titan days.  The Jets will also honor four players from the original team at the half.

I guess it won't be the battle of the green on that Sunday after all.
