NFL Dishes Punishment and Other Jets News

The verdict is in.

Bill Belichick was fined 500,000 clams and the Pats $250,000 for taping the Jets' defensive signals last week.  New England will also give up a first-round pick in next year's draft if they make the playoffs (which if you saw the game last Sunday looks like a pretty safe bet) or will forfeit their second and third round selections if they miss the post-season.

I gotta be honest -- I'm sick of this story so I'm moving on to actual football news relating to the Green and White.

Looks like Kellen Clemens will be making his first NFL start on Sunday in Baltimore against the Ravens.  Chad Pennington is doing his darndest to be ready, but he barely made it through an agility drill on Thursday.  The Jets will probably keep the idea of Pennington starting alive just to confuse the Ravens (even though it seems sorta silly to me), but I would be shocked if number 10 is in the huddle for Gang Green come Sunday.

Personally, I hope Pennington doesn't start.  He really shouldn't have come back in the game when he got hurt against the Pats.  I've been one of Pennington's strongest supporters (maybe the only one), but it makes no sense to rush him back on a bum leg against the Ravens.  Take the week off buddy and let's see where you are next week.

In other injury news, rookie WR Chansi Stuckey's season is over.  The seventh round pick was placed on IR with a foot injury.  Too bad.  The kid showed some real promise in the preseason.

In a surprising move, the Jets signed guard Brandon Moore to a new six-year, $17.3 million deal on Thursday.  He'll also get a raise of over $1 million for 2007 and 2008.  It now makes Gang Green's decision to stonewall Pete Kendall's request for a $1 million raise even stranger.  Maybe Kendall's departure had to do with more than just cash.  Who knows?

The Jets may be down, but they shouldn't allow themselves to wallow in self-pity.  It was an injury plagued Week 1 in the NFL and the Jets Week 2 opponents were also bitten by the injury bug.  Baltimore's QB Steve McNair, LB Ray Lewis, T Jonathan Ogden and kick returner B.J. Sams all sustained injuries against the Bengals on Monday night.  Odgen is out and Sams was placed on IR, but Lewis and McNair will most likely give it a go on Sunday.

Unfortunately for the Jets, running back Willis McGahee is fine and will be in the backfield for the Ravens.
