Sunday is Wayne Chrebet Day

The Green and White will be honoring Wayne Chrebet at halftime of the Jets-Dolphins game.

You all remember Chrebet, right?  The plucky little wide receiver who could?  Actually he was much more than that during his 11-year career which ended prematurely in 2005 after a series of concussions.  He wasn't the fastest and certainly wasn't the biggest guy during his time in the league, but he made a living out of going over the middle and was a first down machine.  I'm not sure if Chrebet received the respect he deserved during his playing days for being a very good wide out and not just an overachieving one.

Anyway, Kevin Manahan had a great article about Chrebet in Thursday's Star-Ledger.  It's a sobering reminder of what some NFL players have to endure after their careers are over.  It's a series of good days and bad days for Chrebet now, but he's facing it with the same grit that made him a fan favorite during his tenure with the Jets.

The Jets haven't said if they are going to retire Chrebet's No. 80 during the ceremony, but this Jets fan thinks they should.  The franchise has only retired three numbers in their history:

12 Joe Namath

13 Don Maynard

73 Joe Klecko

Let's see what happens.

Chrebet finished his career with 580 receptions for 7,365 yards and 41 TDs.

Not too bad for an undrafted free agent out of Hofstra via Garfield, NJ.

Thanks for the memories, Wayne.

In other Jet news, it looks like nothing short of a bolt of lightning will keep Chad Pennington from returning to the huddle.  Mangini doesn't discuss injuries and hasn't officially named No. 10 as the starter for Sunday, but you can connect the dots.  Pennington has also owned the Dolphins in his career.  He's 6-1 against the Fish as a starter with nine touchdown passes and only one pick.

It also looks like Leon Washington will become the primary kickoff returner with the loss of Justin Miller.  The Jets didn't get Washington involved nearly enough during last week's game against the Ravens. Maybe this is a way to give Leon some more touches.  Thomas Jones took all the carries in the backfield in Baltimore and Washington's day consisted of four punt returns for only 6 yards (three fair catches).

And one last thing about this whole Mangini and Belichick fiasco since there seems to be a backlash from other coaches in the league.  I'm actually angry that my brother came up with this possible scenario instead of me, but I have to give him credit.  What if Mangini told Belichick that whatever he does against any other team in the NFL is none of his business -- if the "super-coach" want to tape other teams that's fine -- just don't do it against the Jets.  What if Belichick basically poo-pooed his former assistant and did it anyway.  Mangini's loyalty is to the Jets, not his former mentor.  Again, I'm really sick of this story since it has nothing to do with what the Jets need to do to turn around their season, but it surprises me that people are more concerned about the "coach's code" than with what's right.  Mangini isn't an innocent by any stretch and I don't like the idea of ratting out guys (I am Italian), but maybe Belichick put him in a situation where he was forced to act.  Just a thought.

And that's all I'm going to say about that.

Now, let's get into the win column on Sunday and squish the fish.
