There are still 10 games left for the Jets in 2007, but the season came to an end against Philadelphia on Sunday.
Thomas Jones ran for 130 yards and Mike Nugent kicked three field goals, but it wasn't enough as Brian Westbrook rushed for 120 yards and Kevin Curtis' 75-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter turned out to be the deciding score as the Eagles clipped the Jets 16-9 at the Meadowlands.
The loss drops the Jets to 1-5 this season and could signal the end of Chad Pennington's tenure as the man under center for the Green and White (or Blue and Gold).
REASONS TO GET UP ON MONDAY:
Thomas Jones. Jones went over the century mark for the second time this season and was really the entire offense for the Jets on Sunday. Unfortunately, TJ did most of his damage in the first half and failed to find the end zone (again). It's never a good sign for a team when your starting running back has zero touchdowns after six games. Pitiful. Still, Jones' performance showed why the Jets traded for him in the off-season. Jones finished with 24 carries for 130 yards and had one reception for 11 yards.
The New York Sack Exchange. Well, not really, but the Jets picked up 3 sacks on Sunday. Why is that a big deal? Because they entered the game with 3 sacks on the entire season.
REASONS TO SLEEP IN ON MONDAY:
Chad Pennington. Pennington had his third straight awful game. This goes beyond the numbers -- which weren't good -- it has to do with Pennington's head. In the past, Pennington was able to make up for his short-comings by making the right reads, being smart with the football and playing with confidence. He didn't look like that at all on Sunday. He seemed indecisive at times, made some highly questionable throws and looked like he lost some of the swagger you need in a quarterback. I've been one of Pennington's biggest supporters, but the end may be nigh for No. 10. I know the media and fans have been screaming for a switch for some time, but I believed the Jets were better off with Pennington as the starter. Maybe I was just dumb, maybe I was naive, or maybe I'm just resistant to change. Whatever it was, I now think the Kellen Clemens era is about to begin in New York. Pennington finished 11 for 21 for 128 yards and an INT.
Poor tackling. The Eagles took a 7-3 lead thanks to a nice pass by Donovan McNabb and horrible tackling by safety Eric Smith. Smith, who was filling in for the injured Erik Coleman, took a terrible angle on the play and his poor decision led to a long six for Philadelphia. Incidentally, FOX did a crappy job with this game. I know it wasn't a marquee match-up, but it would have been nice to see the starting lineups for both squads. Also, it went by the boards that Smith was pulled from the starting lineup after that scoring play and that Erik Coleman was inserted at safety despite suffering from concussional side effects (not sure if that's really a medical term, but I'll stick with it). Maybe I'm asking too much, but it would be nice if the announcing team stayed on top of things that are happening in the game. Anyway, Gang Green gave up 151 yards on the ground and allowed 413 yards of total offense, but somehow still managed to keep the Jets in the game. Eagles kicker David Akers helped out by missing two field goals. Hank Poteat picked off a pass that helped set up the Jets final points.
Horrible play calling. Believe it or not, the Jets had a chance to tie this puppy up late in the fourth quarter. The Green and and White (or Blue and Gold) faced a 3rd-and-1 at the Eagles' 4-yard line with four minutes left in the game. This is a situation that good offenses dream about. You could either pound it in with your running back for the first down or go play action and try for the six points or (insert your play here). This was the time for the Jets to dictate to the defense, not the other way around. What do the Jets call? A quarterback sneak. It wasn't 3rd-and-inches, it was third and a yard. Pennington was stopped short. Questionable. OK, 4th-and-1 at the 4, down by seven. Remember now, you don't need the touchdown -- just the first down. What do the Jets call? They go into a shotgun formation and have Pennington throw a timing route to Laveranues Coles in the end zone. The pass was broken up. Highly suspect!! I'm not Monday quarterbacking this -- I was questioning the calls as they happened. Those were two bad plays that just put the bow on another loss for the Jets.
This team looks mentally defeated right now. Forget about the playoffs -- even a delusional fan like me can't make an argument for that anymore -- it's now just a question about finding out how to keep this team from falling apart at the seams. Change may be in order for that to happen.
And it may be at the quarterback spot.
