Not A Good Start For Joba

And I don't mean on the diamond.

Joba Chamberlain was arrested early Saturday morning in Nebraska for allegedly driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.

I'm a pretty laid back kind of guy.  Not many things bother me.  But I have zero tolerance for drunk driving.  It's beyond stupid.  I just don't understand it.

This isn't going to affect Chamberlain's status on the Yanks (at least I don't think so), but he should know better.  Yeah, it's easy to forget that he's still a "kid" (he just turned 23), but this type of thing is intolerable.  He's got the Big Apple in the palm of his hand and he's making these kinds of decisions.

Not the kind of Bomber news I wanted to hear early in this offseason.

Smarten up Joba.

I agree. What a moron. Yankees are so bad, they continue to fall apart in their off-season.

Well, Joba apologized so everything should be just fine now.

I guess. He's semi-famous and a Yankee so he gets a pass.

He'll get no such pass from me! He must -- MUST! -- win 20 games next season to start making amends.

What's the decision with Joba... will he start in the bullpen this year and work into a starting role like last year or will he start as a starter and be kept on a pitch count?

I wish the Yankees would **** or get off the pot with deciding this guy's future. Either make him a starter or put him in the bullpen.

Hank said he'll be a starter to begin the season, but who knows. And I agree -- he should do one or the other. I think he should be a starter until he proves he can't do it. They can always switch him back to the pen if he can't hack it.

I think he'll be a good starter, but also think he'd be a great reliever to take over for Rivera when he retires. Few guys have that closer mentality, and he seems to have it. Do you think they'll continue to keep him on a strict pitch count?

I think Joba would be a great closer, too, but I think it's easier to go back to being a reliever as opposed to becoming a dependable starter. Yeah, the pitch count should be in full force no matter what.

The only thing is the Yankees have to start thinking about life after Mariano. Unless they can pull some great reliever out of thin air, they're going to need a solid closer. I guess when the time comes they can always move Joba back into the pen. But what if he is a twenty-game winner? Hard decision.

Yeah, but Rivera still has two years left. The sad truth is that no one will really be able to replace Rivera when the time comes.

From what I hear, the Yanks do have a few guys in the minors who they believe can be good closers in the future. Melancon and Sanchez are 2 I recall off the top of my head. If Joba blows up though starting, I think the Yanks will be quick to make the move.

They may have good stuff, but there's a certain make-up guys need to be closers. It won't be for a few years, but I'm not sure the Yanks will give the closer role to an unproven commodity.

And it can be a win-win situation for the Yanks if Joba can stay healthy. They could have a top-notch starter or a dominant closer. Not too bad.
