The Boss Speaks

Well, the Boss has spoken and Joe Torre seems to have Steinbrenner's support.

But, a pat on the back is only a few inches from a kick in the arse.

Steinbrenner issued a statement  on Monday in which he say's he's unhappy with the current situation with the team, but that GM Brian Cashman and manager Joe Torre still have his backing.

Frankly, I think Steinbrenner issued the statement just to placate the media and the fans.  The days of Steinbrenner firing managers based on a weekend series against the Red Sox in April are long gone.  Steinbrenner may still be the Don Corleone of the Yankees, but he no longer holds all the strings.  There's a Michael Corleone somewhere in the organization and whether it's Howard Rubenstein, Randy Levine or someone else, there is someone in Steinbrenner's ear.  And that person (or persons) knows that firing Torre now makes no sense.

The main reason for the Yankees poor performance so far has been the starting pitching.  The starters have been besieged by injuries and when a starting pitcher can't deliver at least five innings of quality baseball, it's going to have a negative impact on a club.  The trickle-down effect has also wreaked havoc on the bullpen, which has led to tired arms and sub-par relief.  The Yankee offense can't score 8 runs every night (and sometimes even that isn't enough) so that's the main reason why the Yankees stand a 9-14 so far this season.

Now, Steinbrenner still has the final say on what he wants, but I don't think he knows what that is anymore.  Obviously, he wants to win, but I don't think he necessarily knows how to achieve it.  He has always relied on his "baseball people" for input, but I believe now, more than ever, that his own baseball instincts have left him.  I'm not a doctor and I don't want to say that there is something definitively wrong with The Boss physically or mentally, but I do think he's slipping.  He doesn't speak with the media the way he used to, and when he does, he seems emotional and confused.  Again, I'm not saying that he's a senile old man, but I do think he's getting more help on assessing the State of the Yankees than he did in the past.

OK, with that out of the way, there is nothing that can be done with the team now anyway.  There aren't any trades to be made right now and the Yanks have already dipped into the farm system.  Phil Hughes has already been brought up and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Roger Clemens to come back.

Once Wang, Mussina, Pettitte, Igawa, Hughes and possibly Pavano (he's still on the team so I'm throwing him in there) take consecutive turns in the rotation is when the Yanks will have a better sense of what kind of team they have.

Then we can see what kind of reaction Mr. Steinbrenner has.

Until then, all this talk is just nonsense.

Wang is Ineffective as Red Sox Out-Muscle Yanks

[April 29, 2007 at 11:27 PM] It's still April, but only two teams have a worse record than the Yankees at this point. The Kansas City Royals and the Washington Nationals. Yep, it's been a rough first month. The Yankees dropped the rubber game to... - Continue Reading

Super-Sub Igawa Helps Yanks End Slide

[April 28, 2007 at 10:08 PM] "What else can go wrong for this team, Suzyn?" Those were the words I heard John Sterling mutter when I turned on the Yankee game in my car Saturday afternoon.  I just wanted to get a feel for the... - Continue Reading

Losing Streak Reaches 7

[April 28, 2007 at 12:31 AM] It is becoming a painful chore to watch the Yankees right now. The hated Boston Red Sox drubbed the Yanks Friday, 11-4, on a raw, damp, ugly night in the Bronx.  The Yanks are now 0-4 against the Sox this... - Continue Reading

Hughes Loses First Start as Yankee Bats Fall Silent

[April 27, 2007 at 1:49 AM] Phil Hughes made his first start in the Bigs at the tender age of 20 on Thursday night, but the excitement and promise he brought to The Stadium wasn't enough as the Yanks lost their sixth straight, this time to... - Continue Reading

Wang Returns But Yanks Still Lose

[April 24, 2007 at 10:57 PM] I thought the tide was turning when Hideki Matsui reached first base on a throwing error from Scott Kazmir in the top of the seventh inning.  It ignited a Yankee rally and gave the Bombers a 3-2 lead. I... - Continue Reading

Yankees Drop 4th in a Row

[April 24, 2007 at 1:52 AM] You would think scoring 8 runs and banging out 13 hits would be more than enough offense to win a game. You would think. However, the old adage still rings true -- pitching wins ballgames -- and right now... - Continue Reading

Yankees Swept Away in Boston

[April 23, 2007 at 12:23 AM] Joe Torre fired almost every bullet available from the Yankee roster, but it still wasn't enough to get a win. The Yanks dropped their third straight game to the Red Sox Sunday night, 7-6, to complete Boston's sweep.  Chase Wright,... - Continue Reading

Yankees Drop Second Straight in Beantown

[April 21, 2007 at 7:57 PM] The good news is that reinforcements are on the way. The bad news is that the good news didn't matter Saturday as the Yanks dropped another one to the Red Sox, 7-5, at Fenway. The Yankees jumped on Josh Beckett... - Continue Reading

A-Rod's Heroics are Wasted as BoSox Rally for Five in the Eighth

[April 20, 2007 at 10:44 PM] The Baseball Gods giveth and the Baseball Gods taketh away. What a difference a day makes. The Yankees dropped a heart-breaker to the Boston Red Sox Friday night 7-6.  Alex Rodriguez blasted two more homers, but it wasn't enough as... - Continue Reading

Alexander The Great Conquers Again!

[April 19, 2007 at 4:54 PM] Just give Alex Rodriguez the MVP right now. The Yankees scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth, all with two outs, and A-Rod delivered another game winning three-run bomb to give the Yanks an astonishing 8-6 victory over... - Continue Reading

Igawa Notches First Win as Yanks Romp

[April 18, 2007 at 10:47 PM] He may technically be a rookie, but Kei Igawa has done this before.  In fact, he's done it 86 times.  Igawa picked up his first victory in the Big Leagues Wednesday night and the Yankee bats continued their assault on... - Continue Reading

Yankees Batter Tribe

[April 17, 2007 at 10:51 PM] Chase Wright was called up from Trenton, but it was the Bombers who brought the Thunder. The Yankees belted three homers in the second inning and Chase Wright was good enough as the Yanks defeated the Cleveland Indians 10-3 on... - Continue Reading

A's Shock Rivera and Yanks

[April 15, 2007 at 6:59 PM] I guess Mariano Rivera is human. Marco Scutaro belted a three-run homer off Rivera in the bottom of the ninth to lift the A's to an improbable 5-4 victory over the Yankees in Oakland.  It was Rivera's first save opportunity... - Continue Reading

Giambi's Blast Helps Yanks Win War of Attrition

[April 15, 2007 at 3:45 AM] It was either going to be a rousing come-from-behind victory or another brutal extra inning loss. Jason Giambi, Public Enemy #1 in Oakland, gave the A's fans another reason to despise him as he blasted a game-winning homer in the... - Continue Reading

Missed Opportunities Doom Yanks

[April 14, 2007 at 3:45 AM] The saddest thing in life is wasted opportunities. OK, I bastardized a line from A Bronx Tale  and maybe I'm being a tad over-dramatic.  Still, the Yankees had their chances against the Oakland A's Friday night and failed to capitalize, falling... - Continue Reading

Yankee Bats Silenced as Mussina Leaves with Injury

[April 12, 2007 at 2:55 AM] Well, it was fun while it lasted. The recently rejuvenated rotation took a step backward against the Twins Wednesday night. Mike Mussina left with a strained hamstring after only two plus innings as the Yanks fell to Minnesota 5-1. So far,... - Continue Reading

A-Rod, Pettitte and Company Roll Over Twins

[April 11, 2007 at 1:40 AM] I can get used to this. Andy Pettitte won his 150th game as a New York Yankee and Alex Rodriguez belted his sixth homer in seven games to help lead the Yanks over the Minnesota Twins, 10-1.  Johnny Damon also... - Continue Reading

Pavano, Yankee Bats Drop Twins

[April 9, 2007 at 10:20 PM] It took a week, but a New York Yankee starter finally delivered a quality start and earned a victory.  Yes, it is possible to achieve both and it came from the most unlikely source. Carl Pavano was brilliant (no,... - Continue Reading

Yankee Starters Continue to Stumble in Loss to O's

[April 8, 2007 at 11:48 PM] Maybe it's time for the unorthodox.  Maybe the Yanks should use the bullpen to start the game and then bring in a starter to close it out.  It couldn't be any stranger than watching Andy Pettitte take the hill... - Continue Reading

A-Rod's Slam in 9th Keys Yanks Comeback

[April 7, 2007 at 4:27 PM] You knew something definitive was going to happen when Alex Rodriguez stepped into the box with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth.  Hero or goat -- there's no middle ground for A-Rod. Today... - Continue Reading

Orioles Down Yanks

[April 7, 2007 at 4:07 AM] For the first time this season the New York Yankees did not commit an error. Baby steps, people.  Baby steps. The Yanks dropped their second straight Friday, this time to the Baltimore Orioles, 6-4. Once again a starter failed to deliver... - Continue Reading

Rays Outlast Yanks

[April 6, 2007 at 3:58 AM] Andy Pettitte waited until after the National Anthem to reclaim his rightful spot on the mound in Yankee Stadium.  The applause rained down for Pettitte's contributions in helping to deliver 4 championships to the Bronx in the past and... - Continue Reading

Memories at The Stadium

[April 4, 2007 at 4:00 PM] Since the Yankees have been rained out today and since ESPN isn't showing any day baseball games (damn commies!) and since Major League Baseball screwed cable subscribers out of their free week preview of out-of-market baseball games, I've decided... - Continue Reading

Pettitte's Return Washed Away

[April 4, 2007 at 12:49 PM] Andy Pettitte's return to the Yankee Stadium rubber will have to wait until Thursday. The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Devil Rays were rained out today in New York.  No makeup date has been announced.  Joe Torre also reshuffled... - Continue Reading

Yanks Prevail on Opening Day

[April 2, 2007 at 4:12 PM] It wasn't pretty, in fact, it was downright ugly at times, but the New York Yankees out-muscled the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9-5 on Opening Day for their first victory of the 2007 season. Carl Pavano started out okay for... - Continue Reading
