It never, ever turns out the way I expected, but I guess that's what makes sports so much fun.
I made my predictions on how the 2007 NFL season would unfold and I gotta tell ya, I was WAY, WAY off. Here's the link to my
NFC picks way back in September. How off was I? Well, only one of my picks, the Seattle Seahawks, actually made the playoffs and I scribbled them down as the wild card. I also predicted the New Orleans Saints to represent the Blue Conference in the Super Bowl. Terrible.

How did I think the six teams that have actually made the playoffs would do at the beginning of the year? Take a look:
Dallas Cowboys
Predicted: 9-7 (2nd place, no playoffs)
Actual: 13-3 (division champs)
New York Giants
Predicted: 6-10 (3rd place, no playoffs)
Actual: 10-6 (2nd place, wild card)
Washington Redskins
Predicted: 6-10 (4th place, no playoffs)
Actual: 9-7 (3rd place, wild card)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Predicted: 5-11 (3rd place, no playoffs)
Actual: 9-7 (division champs)
Green Bay Packers
Predicted: 5-11 (4th place, no playoffs)
Actual: 13-3 (division champs)
Seattle Seahawks
Predicted: 9-7 (2nd place, wild card)
Actual: 10-6 (division champs)
If you don't feel like checking the link to my NFC picks (how dare you!), here's a look at the teams I thought would be in the hunt for a championship in 2007:
Philadelphia Eagles (division champs)
Chicago Bears (division champs)
New Orleans Saints (division champs)
Carolina Panthers (wild cards)
St. Louis Rams (division champs)
Seattle Seahawks (wild card)
OK, I failed miserably in the National Football Conference, but that's not my scene. I'm an
AFC guy, so I had to do much better there, right? Right? Well, I correctly chose four out of the six teams to make the post-season, but I was dead wrong about my beloved Jets. They didn't finish 10-6 and obviously didn't make the wild card. I was also off about the New England Patriots. How off? Here's what I wrote about the Pats before the season started:
"The Patriots will be good, but they won't be as good as people think."
Oh, if only that were true. Anyway, here's a look at how I thought the season would go for teams that made the playoffs this season:
New England Patriots
Predicted: 11-5 (division champs)
Actual: 16-0 (division champs)
Pittsburgh Steelers
Predicted: 9-7 (2nd place, no playoffs)
Actual: 10-6 (division champs)
Indianapolis Colts
Predicted: 11-5 (division champs)
Actual: 13-3 (division champs)
Jacksonville Jaguars
Predicted: 10-6 (2nd place, wild card)
Actual: 11-5 (2nd place, wild card)
Tennessee Titans
Predicted: 6-10 (3rd place, no playoffs)
Actual: 10-6 (3rd place, wild card)
San Diego Chargers
Predicted: 12-4 (division champs)
Actual: 11-5 (division champs)
All in all, not too bad. I got three out of four division winners correct and nailed one wild card. But I would trade all the accolades that come with being right (there are accolades that come with this, right?) for a playoff berth for my Jets. Again, if you don't feel like checking out my earlier prognostications here are the teams I predicted to make it to the second season:
New England Patriots (division champs)
New York Jets (wild card)
Baltimore Ravens (division champs)
Indianapolis Colts (division champs)
Jacksonville Jaguars (wild card)
San Diego Chargers (division champs)
I picked the Chargers to represent the Red Conference in the Super Bowl and gosh-darnit, they're still in it! However, I no longer think they are going to come out of the highly competitive AFC. But then again, don't take anything I predict all that seriously.
