Jets Trade For Lito Sheppard

It's free agent time in the NFL, but that doesn't mean the Jets are afraid to pull the trigger on a trade.

Gang Green acquired cornerback Lito Sheppard from the Philadelphia Eagles for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft and a conditional pick in 2010 that could go as high as a second-rounder.

Sheppard was a No. 1 draft pick by the Eagles in 2002 and was voted to two Pro Bowls during his stint in Philadelphia.  The 27-year-old Sheppard was made expendable when Philadelphia inked cornerback Asante Samuel last season.  Sheppard played mostly in the nickel and dime in 2008.

It's a solid move by the Jets.  Sheppard can be temperamental at times, but he gives the Gotham Green a legit corner to team with Darrelle Revis.  The Jets are also still looking at picking up former Baltimore Ravens cornerback Corey Ivy.

The Jets also re-signed fullback Tony Richardson on Thursday.  Another solid move.  Thomas Jones rushed for a career-high 1,312 yards and 13 touchdowns last year.  Richardson was responsible for a good chunk of that.  The 37-year-old Richardson will be entering his 15th season.

In other Jet-related news, tight end Chris Baker signed with the New England Patriots on Friday.  Baker will join a loaded offense and should have a good year in New England (Dang namit!).  The Pats also picked up running back Fred Taylor to help shore up their running game and traded quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs for the Chiefs' second-round pick (34th overall) in this year's draft.  I guess Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick are still good friends.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Laveranues Coles met Friday with the Buffalo Bills.  I don't think Coles will wind up in Buffalo, but I do think he'll end up with another AFC East rival (can you guess which one?).  Dolphins QB Chad Pennington said he won't lobby for his former teammate, but he did talk up LC's experience:

"He could bring experience. You can't replace that, and you can't put a number on that. That's what I tried to do this year, and what I thought one of my roles would be. So that's something he definitely brings to the table."

Guh!  Jets becoming Patriots and Dolphins -- is there anything more revolting?
